In July 1943 the locomotive was one of 5 S160s re-assigned to the War Department. Based at Sudbury in Staffordshire, there is a rumour that in August of that year it was in ’specially painted’ colours. A Barnsley fireman recalls that some of the locos were painted khaki or ’drab’.
