In July 1943 the locomotive was one of 5 S160s re-assigned to the War Department. Based at Sudbury in Staffordshire, there is a rumour that in August of that year it was in ’specially painted’ colours. A Barnsley fireman recalls that some of the locos were painted khaki or ’drab’. If any S160s appeared in green, 2044 is therefore the most likely candidate.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt was returned to the USATC for deployment in September 1944. The engine \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eworked in France with the USATC before becoming part of the SNCF fleet until \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eJuly 1946.
