Specific Locomotive History

No.2044 arrived in Manchester in April 1943 and was originally allocated to the LMS at Toton. In July 1943 the locomotive was one of 5 S160s re-assigned to the War Department. Based at Sudbury in Staffordshire, there is a rumour that in August of that year it was in ’specially painted’ colours. A Barnsley fireman recalls that some of the locos were painted khaki or ’drab’. If any S160s appeared in green, 2044 is therefore the most likely candidate.

It was returned to the USATC for deployment in September 1944. The engineworked in France with the USATC before becoming part of the SNCF fleet untilJuly 1946. The locomotive subsequently moved to Poland and joined the PKP fleet as Tr203.5.
