You’d think we’d be brassed off by now with the huge amount of American HO models passing through Clark Railworks of late – or that perhaps we’re breeding them. Not so. Because we’re still fascinated by the sheer variety and unusual-ness of some of these models, from a remarkable single-owner collection. With this week’s shimmering entries, you can fight fires, kill weeds, transport cars, or even employ a Transformer Car…whatever that is.

What’s unusual about this current crop of pre-owned HO models is the sheer amount of them made from brass. But what’s so special about fool’s gold that makes it so enticing to model railway enthusiasts?

For one thing, models made of brass are usually much heavier than their plastic counterparts. And weight is (generally) good in the world of trains – especially when it comes to engines – as, married to high-quality mechanisms, it translates into better adhesion and superior pulling power. Maybe not an issue when operating a three-wagon ‘pick-up goods’…but across the pond, freight rakes don’t come small!

Another brass benefit is the level of intricate detail that you just can’t quite squeeze out of even the finest plastic. There’s a crispness and authenticity to those cables, pipes and rivets that just looks so darn gooood!

Brass models feel great in the hand (partly due to that extra weight), tend to be more durable than their plastic sisters, and – perhaps because real trains are themselves made of metal – seem…well, yeah – real!

Obviously, models made from brass cost more than those constructed from plastic. But because they’re produced in far lower quantities and often custom finished, you get some very rare prototypes that simply wouldn’t be viable mass-produced. Which means that like fine wine, they can be just as much an investment as something to enjoy on your layout or in your cabinet.
So why not take a taste and treat yourself to something unique from this wonderful collection?
