Locomotive History

Built for the Ministry of Supply in January 1944 and delivered as number ‘3672’, she was eventually renumbered as ‘73672’ with works number 25458. The engine was shipped to Egypt with 15 other class members and placed in store. By October 1945 the locomotives were deemed surplus to requirements, sold to the Hellenic State Railways and shipped to Salonika in January 1946. ‘73672’ was renumbered Λβ960 and based in the Salonika divisions working duties such as the Athens - Istanbul express.

Final withdrawal came in 1979, when the loco was purchased by Mr D Milham and repatriated to the Lavender Line at Isfield (East Sussex) in August 1984. After repairs, the loco was renumbered ‘3672’ and on 6th August 1985 was named ‘Dame Vera Lynn’ by the lady herself. ‘3672’ then moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and is currently under overhaul. The tender has been completely refurbished by Ian Riley of Heywood.
